Joshua Michael Carro (b. 1982) is a versatile multimedia artist, MPSE‑nominated composer, music designer, percussionist, sound designer, producer, and educator. Carro’s work focuses on developing new methods of graphic and modular composition for instruments of any kind, extended through electro‑acoustic systems and visual elements. His research spans sound design, composition, production, music technology, North Indian Classical tabla, and social artistic behavior. His work has appeared in AAA and independent games (Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Borderlands 4), as well as film and television for platforms including Netflix and National Geographic, with performances and broadcasts worldwide. He is also the drummer for Ascend the Helix, contributing to the band’s hybrid approach to metal, sound design, and contemporary production.
Maintaining a disciplined and versatile artistic practice, Carro performs with BLOOD OATH (Los Angeles) alongside Ulrich Krieger (Lou Reed, Metal Machine Trio, Sonic Youth). Described as an “extreme physical entity,” BLOOD OATH is the first experimental noise‑metal saxophone‑drum duo, forging new paths in abstract metal through a convergence of dark ambient, harsh noise, doom and death metal, and free improvisation.
Carro is also a core member of Ehnahre, the extreme metal ensemble and contemporary composition collective based in Boston, Massachusetts. Ehnahre’s work draws from contemporary classical and aleatoric music, doom and death metal, serialism, free improvisation, and extended instrumental techniques, merging chamber music rigor with extreme metal intensity.
Carro’s solo project [[[personablack]]] is the primary focus of his sound and artistic research. A solo electro‑acoustic drumming project, [[[personablack]]] cross‑pollinates musical languages ranging from antiquity to modern experimental noise and cinematic sound design. Integrating advanced use of Ableton Live and Max for Live software, the project explores emergent performance systems and compositional structures. With over 300 compositions and more than 50 albums, Carro’s work under [[[personablack]]] has been performed and broadcast internationally,.
